thanks for your comment =) actually I've been hunting down such childhood stories through biographies I've read of Mozart family, and I did find a few. I'm not yet prepared to draw conclusions, but an overall impression I've got so far is that what influenced Wolfgang the most in his early years, was not just his father teaching him (like a formal study session of violin or other instrument), but the whole atmosphere and environment in which young W. was growing up. He had instruments for toys, he could always hear his sister and his dad practicing alone or with other musicians - all of them quite professional, music was a pleasure for him long before it turned into hard work and so on...
On top of that the obvious excellence of son above father in composition indicates what Leopold couldn't teach Wolfgang - BUT he provided for W. to learn from others, those he thought better than himself. He encouraged W. to draw from many sources not limiting him to just his own tutorship.
As for Beethoven - I haven't spent much time on his biography just yet, and I'm far from comparing the two composers or the two personalities. What I'm after is making an overview of childhood years of two boys with musical ability - what gave one such a jump start, what hindered and haunted the other, how their families formed and influenced their progress.
I'm not really looking into an in depth analysis, just perhaps some guidelines for parents who'd like to encourage their children in music, instead of pushing them through music school years, making them hate their instrument rather than enjoy it, as is often the case in Russia to this day.
